Naming my Irises for Memories 6.14.11

Flower Beds border my home on all four sides, in the back and two sides I have planted my Iris plants. My children carefully chose each bulb and gave it to me as a Mother’s Day gift, usually after a picnic on the ground of the Napa Valley Iris Farm. http://www.napairis.com I loved the days of my children’s childhood and seeing the happy faces of my Iris’ in bloom bring back to me the memories of those sweet days. Somehow I don’t remember being exhausted and burdened because of finances, even though I Know I was.

Some things haven’t changed, I still feel exhausted at the end of the day and burdened by finances that won’t quite stretch to meet needs, but I do have wonderful memories of happy days. I had a wise mentor who once told me that life was like climbing mountains. You struggled, got scratched, knew thirst, found wonderful cool streams and shade trees to rest under, then you got up and kept climbing. One day you reached the pinnacle and you rejoiced in the grand vistas and fresh air. When you turned around there was another larger mountain to climb, and you chose to climb it, but before you could get to its top you had to climb down and trudge through its valley. And this process would continue for as long as there were mountains you chose to climb.

What does this have to do with Iris? Nothing really. Except to me the Iris brings wonderful memories and that is the same as a drink of cool water from a mountain stream or a rest under a shade tree as I trudge toward a new vista.
